A Digital Dash for Your ECU Master Black, the RDM-7

Running an ECU Master EMU Black? The RDM-7 has a built-in preset for it. Pick ECU Master Black in the setup wizard and the channels come up named and scaled, read straight off the bus.

Good news compared to the Classic

CAN is built into the EMU Black. No add-on module, unlike the EMU Classic, which needs ECU Master's external CAN BUS module before it can talk to a dash at all. If you are on a Black, the bus is already there.

Setting it up

Two things have to be true in ECU Master's software:

• Send EMU stream over CAN-Bus is enabled. Without it the ECU is on the bus but silent.
• The CAN bus speed is set to 500 kbps, which is the Black's normal rate.

Worth knowing: ECU Master's termination is a software setting rather than a physical jumper. Their documentation notes that the 120 ohm termination resistor is enabled through the ECU configuration software, set according to your bus topology. A bus that is not terminated properly at both ends is the usual reason a dash sees nothing or drops frames.

ECU Master's documentation puts CAN on the 39-pin black connector, CAN+ on pin 12 and CAN- on pin 25. Confirm that against your own manual before you cut anything — pinouts vary by revision and we would rather you checked.

What the install takes at the dash end

Four wires: 12 V switched ignition, chassis ground, CAN High, CAN Low. Fuse the 12 V at 2 A. The plug is an eight-way push-in terminal block with release tabs — strip, push, done. No crimping.
